A Third Way: Neither

September 2, 2010

It isn’t much fun trying to live in the middle. Trying to avoid what you see as the extremes of each side. That is typically how we see this.

Here is the deal. I’m not saying we should try to live in the middle, it only seems that way because of how our culture tells us to think. I’m actually saying we should abandon that way of thinking and the system all together and identify with the third way.

You see from time to time I am accused of being a liberal. All the helping we attempt to do for those who are less fortunate seems to be identified with one party or group. Now I am also identified as conservative by others. My moral positions and my belief that we should live holy and righteous lives seems to have that effect.

So I get it from both sides and because of the current context the pressure is to join one or the other. Well I naturally fall more in line with conservative Republicans and so the pressure is often to take their side. The problem is I have a lot of issues with what the Republicans say, teach, and do.

Well the Democrats don’t seem to really want me but they do at least like what I have to say about helping people in need. So if we allow this way of thinking to frame the debate I have no home, I have no side and I wonder aimlessly prone to side with Republicans because what else can I do.

That is why we need to see the third way. The way that sides with Jesus. No, not the Jesus cooped by either party for their own personal gain. The Jesus of the Bible who both hated sin and perversion but also loved sinners and told us that this love takes the form of helping people in need, the poor, widow and orphans.

It is the side that can stand against perversion without standing for corruption and greed. It is the side that can help the needy without agreeing that we abandon the needs of the unborn. It is not a place in the middle, it is standing on the side of Jesus, not really the third way but the only way.

It is the side that has the guts to blow up the entire system and say you can’t make us play by your rules. Our Jesus is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and end. Let Paul tells us exactly what side we are on.

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. Colossians 1:15-20

That guy. He doesn’t need your vote. Do you hear the words? ALL THINGS. WHETHER THRONES OR POWERS OR RULERS OR AUTHORITIES. He doesn’t need you to turn a blind eye to the shadier parts of his platform. You don’t have to explain him as the lesser of two evils and you have the distinct advantage of not needing to go to a ballot box to show him support. You don’t need to wait every four years or two. You get to place your vote daily. You get to side with His agenda. You get to depend on His power. You get to reflect the compassion He has shown us.

Stop waiting for others to agree. Stop waiting for everyone to say I get it. Start living it, the third way. The one that says Jesus is Lord. It will put you at odds with both sides from time to time. If it doesn’t then you have probably falling back into the current paradigm.

Why can we not see that both sides are ultimately serving the same master? Why don’t we get that when a certain TV personality goes in front of a nation and trumpets honor and courage without the name of Jesus? Are we really saying that honor and courage in any other name is the same? And this is the conservative viewpoint?

But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:15

God bless.

I have to say, you’re right. Exactly right about this. This is exactly how Catholics have been taught by the one true church to live. Every government not centered on God is bound to fail. Take care of the less fortunate. Be good to each other. And always worship God first.

Every election, I try to remember and remind others: Our King was chosen a long time ago. Politicians will come and go, nations will rise and fall, but our King will remain.

    Grace and peace,

Amen Tim. I think a lot of people are headed this way. I found it interesting reading your posts knowing what was on my mind.

I believe in the christian world view so i view economics, politics, sociology, psychology, government, etc. from this.

So in politics, I could never vote for today’s democrat. They want to redistriubute wealth: that is stealing from the works of one to give to another. Thou shalt not steal,
the democrats are abortion driven. A baby , from conception is a life. How could I vote in favor of a party that is for death.
In terms of war and capital punshment. God is just; He does not denounce war :
The death penalty is also God’s justice – if a man takes a life then in the secular world it is just for that man to be put to death
God created the Nations of this earth. Those nations that Honor God will be blessed. God said whoever blesses Israel, I will bless.
the Democrats are not for giving a hand up; they are for giving a hand out: this creates a culture of dependency
I could go on and on and on how it is the democrats who are anti-God
I will never vote for a democrat as long as the leftists rule it.
    Social Justice is Marxist

You are a very confused group of people and I recommend the author stop playing the innocent martyr. If I do this, i’m considered a liberal but…. ….
    your third way? Luke warm?
I don’t want a theocracy.and if an athiest ran for office who actually held conservative views, i’d vote for him but not if he were a democrat.

We are called to be good citizens. Paul took his case to Rome: he demanded they hear him as he was a citizen of Rome

If we are to vote our conscience and my conscience is based on God’s Words, I don’t see why you have a huge problem?
