Seek the Kingdom First

May 27, 2009

What does that mean? Does it simply mean I’m a nice person? I haven’t run anyone over with a car today?

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33

There is a pretty big promise that comes with the idea of seeking God’s kingdom first. Jesus said that if you do so everything else will fall into place. A pretty important promise wouldn’t you say?

And yet our idea of what it means to seek God’s kingdom first will greatly impact what we do. What does seeking the kingdom first mean to you? Does it mean we seek the values of the kingdom, to instill them into our lives? Does it mean we attempt to impose the values of the kingdom on others?

So the preacher says seek God’s kingdom and yet if we don’t understand what that means it may simply come across that we are telling people to make sure they buckle up on the way home from church today because that it what good people do.

In Mark 10:28 Peter says to Jesus that he has left everything for the sake of the kingdom of God.

“I tell you the truth,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” Mark 10:29-31

It seems like Jesus is saying something will be added because of this commitment. Left everything to follow Him.

So what does it mean to seek the kingdom first to you?
