Guilt Free Golf

April 6, 2009

I remember several years ago listening to a Pastor explain that the new Saturday evening service would allow members a chance at guilt free golf. I remember wondering about it then.

When church is scheduled so that we can do something else have we missed something? I’m certainly not advocating set times, the early church met before daybreak but just think about that. They had to work on Sunday, no weekend for most people. They would get up early to go and worship and then take off for work. Then after work they would come together for the love feast and Lord’s Supper.

I wonder what part of that schedule was set up to be guilt free.

On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”

Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you? What if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled him.”

“From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.” John 6:61-69

Where will we go? What other option did they see? They dropped everything to follow Jesus. They gave up what they were doing and changed course. We wonder what to do about discipleship today. Should we expect disciples when we don’t expect commitment? When we ask them to just fit church in instead of asking them to give all they have?

Are we not all guilty of this today? Thoughts?
