Fish Dinner

April 2, 2009

I was driving behind an SUV that had one of those fish eating Darwin fish and I started to think about what they were trying to say.

darwin_fishI mean are they saying Jesus would have eaten Darwin? That Christians should eat those who explain our origins as nothing more than a random act?

It seems like a pretty competitive statement. I understand that the Darwin walking fish came about to poke fun at Christian beliefs but what does this say?

Every person who has a Darwinian walking fish is someone who matters to God. As we approach Easter we are reminded that Jesus was sent on their behalf as well. Jesus came for everyone whatever their belief on macro-evolution. Paul states that Jesus “died for the ungodly” (Romans 5:6).

Certainly he wants them to place their faith in Jesus Christ but in what way do these bumper displays help?

What do we accomplish when we make these statements? Conflict? How does it make Christians look? Small and insecure?

Paul told the early church that our enemy was the devil and that our battle was not with flesh and blood but with “the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places” (Eph. 6:12).

People who believe in evolution are not our enemy and I don’t see how having Jesus eat them helps.

I’ve always thought that those things said, “Hah! Take that! You lose!” Not exactly the spirit of Christ.

Notice also that it’s “TRUTH” that swallows up “DARWIN.” This just feeds the non-believer’s perception that Christians are people who think that they, and only they, have all of the truth. My agnostic students seem most put off by Christians they regard as both stupid and smug.
