Parents and Words

November 14, 2008

I just want to throw this out for you. Just tonight I spent some time with a young man who whether he knows it or not is really struggling. The direction of his life is very precarious.

Unfortunately what some in his family don’t understand is when you attack someone’s parent whether it be a mother or father you are attacking the child. I just don’t think people understand this. If you speak poorly of a child’s parent you are actually speaking poorly of the child. I wish people understood this so that maybe they wouldn’t put a parent down.

This happens with divorce far to often. At times it is extended family. They say what they think of the father not realizing that this really hurts the son. We think they are two different people but for a child they instinctively understand that they are connected. That a part of mom and dad made me.

Please don’t bad mouth the other parent. If you have been divorced refrain from saying ugly things about your ex spouse. Only say things that are positive, remember there were things you used to love about them. What you might not understand is your child hears all of that and takes it to heart. If you say the father is a bum the child will more then likely consider themselves one as well.

Let’s only say what is constructive in building up others. You never know just how powerful your words can be.

Just happened by. Great point, I couldn’t agree more.

Thanks for putting it out there.

Extremely wise insight. I hope you didn’t learn that the hard way. Thanks for sharing it.

No, but I wish at times some would hear it. To often anger gets the better of them.

    I just see the results.
