Jesus could have had a mega church

May 25, 2007

Do you think we understand this? He could have plopped a big mega building with mega everything right by the Sea of Galilee. If he had wanted to get the ruling class on board he could have, he certainly understood their mindset. If he had wanted the government on board he certainly would know what it takes, but he didn’t do that.

If Jesus had wanted to get celebrities on board it would have been done. Do we understand that? He could have had whomever he wanted. He could have given them whatever they needed to get on board.

Do we realize that Jesus could have had any demographic that he deemed necessary? The skaters of his day would have been no problem. Men in church, he could have gotten it done. Sword play a necessity, okay here we go.

Do we understand that? I have not always understood this. I remember thinking that the reason churches were small is because they wanted to be small. Now I realize in some cases this is true but I also have to contend with the fact that it some cases it is because that is God’s purpose for that group.

You see Jesus could have created any of those things but he didn’t. Instead he focused on a group of twelve guys and helped guide them and shape them for His purpose. When he was about to ascend he told them to go and wait and so the first real mega group anywhere only happened because God ordained it. It didn’t happen because they had the right marketing or facility or people promoting it, it happened because of the power of God.

I think maybe we need a lot less this is what we are trying to create no matter what that may be and a little more this is what God is trying to build. May I be faithful to that and let God worry about the rest. I’m not sure that under today’s standards we would rate those twelve a success since they didn’t seem to have in mind creating anything and certainly not what we have today.

    Great post.
It is very easy for us to forget the power of God and that he does work in our lives today. He works powerfully in our lives if we allow Him. As Paul said, “He is able to do than all we ask or imagine.” It is so easy to rely on technolgy, power point, 100 different ministries to meet our needs that we forget that God all that God and will do. We forget His Holy Spirit and the Gifts that are manifest within us. Whether mega, supersize me church or small country church God can send forth a harvest if we don’t rely on self (the creation) but on God (the creator).

How have we gotten this whole thing so twisted? As Lee Hodges advised me a few weeks ago (Rabboni Blog) in a phone conversation, we’d do more for the kingdom if we’d just focus on maturing one person, and then another, and then another. And if we all did that, and took it seriously, we’d turn the world upside down. However, too many are in search of the mega church, or something similar, relying on strategies and money (horses and chariots), rather than the power of God.

    You’ve given us a great reminder . . . as usual!

I really believe that we spend far too many resources, too much energy, and way too much time arguing about what we do for a couple of hours on Sunday. Imagine if we took half of that energy and commitment and used it Monday-Saturday!
